Peak Season Deadlines for UPS Teamsters
TIME-SENSITIVE: Make sure to read this important information on upcoming deadlines for part-timers and RPCDs regarding peak season work.
Part-Timers Have Until September 15 to Sign Up to Deliver Packages During Peak
Part-time UPS Teamsters who want to make extra money during peak season can sign up to deliver packages using their personal vehicles. The deadline to sign an interest list to be a Seasonal Support Driver (SSD) is September 15.
Here are important contract rights to know.
- Part-timers who sign up to work as Seasonal Support Drivers will start November 1
- They will be paid at their regular inside rate, or RPCD starting rate, whichever is higher
- On top of their hourly pay, Seasonal Support Drivers will also get a mileage reimbursement paid at the IRS rate of 67 cents per mile
- Seasonal Support Drivers get an 8-hour daily guarantee through the end of peak season
- UPS will provide personal vehicle insurance to SSD’s while they are performing work
Make sure your center has an interest list posted for part-timers to sign up to deliver during peak by September 15. UPS is required to post this list under Article 26.
UPS can fill SSD positions not taken by part-timers with off-the-street hires.
- Off-the-street seasonal support drivers can only work from November 15 through December 26
- Off-the-street seasonal support drivers will have a three-hour daily guarantee
- Off-the-street seasonal support drivers will be members of the bargaining unit
- Off-the-street seasonal support drivers will also get a mileage reimbursement of 67 cents a mile and vehicle insurance coverage while performing work
Drivers: Protect Your Overtime from Being Reduced During Peak Season
Our Teamster contract at UPS prohibits the company from reducing overtime opportunities for RPCDs during peak season, but there’s an important catch. The company can reduce overtime for RPCDs who are on the 9.5 list as of September 1 under Article 26.
If you rely on your overtime and want to protect your right to file a grievance if UPS reduces it during peak season, then you can use the add/cut form to get off the 9.5 list by the deadline. The downside is that you will lose your 9.5 rights and penalty pay from September 1 until the start of peak.
Drivers who want to take this option should submit the add/cut form without delay. Article 37 requires one week notice for changes to the 9.5 list.
Package drivers who rely on overtime during peak season can use the add/cut form to get off the 9.5 list. To get off the 9.5 list by the September 1 deadline, RPCDs should submit the add/cut form by Monday, August 26.

The relevant contract language is in the last paragraph of Article 26, Section 1 of the National Master Agreement: “In no event shall the implementation of this Section serve to diminish the overtime opportunities for RPCDs not using the protections of Article 37, Section 1(c) as of September 1st of that year, or alter bid delivery area routes for RPCDs.”
