UPS is dumping volume and closing buildings. As part of these changes, UPS wants to get rid of older and higher-paid Teamsters and replace them with workers who are younger and lower-paid.
UPS doesn’t give a damn about you or your retirement. The buyout offer isn’t about helping you or your family. This is about hiking profits for Wall Street and killing good union jobs for the rest of us.
By replacing 20,000 drivers who make $45 an hour with drivers who make $23 an hour, UPS would save $1 billion a year. This doesn't even count the profit boost that UPS would get out of harassing less senior drivers into working faster.
If Carol Tomé wants to make the company better, she can start by respecting the contract, not violating it.
She can respect our 9.5 rights and make management adjust our loads when we file grievances, instead of just paying penalty pay and sending us out to work 12 and 13-hour days.
She can direct the company to create 7,500 new, permanent full-time 22.3 jobs. Instead they’re eliminating Teamster jobs through automation.
She can require UPS to install air conditioning in 28,000 vehicles instead of leaving members to get sick and die in the extreme heat.
Carol Tomé is not going to do these things unless we make her. That’s why management works so hard to divide us. That’s why we need to stick together.
UPS is a grueling job. Every one of us has dreamed of a windfall that would make it possible to retire.
But UPS isn’t above the contract or the law. Management doesn’t get to make up their own rules.
